Just how far would Haircut have gone if Nick Heyward had stayed with the band past this superb debut album? It’s one of the great unanswerable questions of 80s UK pop. With a clean-cut image and the teen idol good looks of their frontman, it’s perfectly reasonable to presume they could have been as big as Wham! or Duran Duran.
Boasting an irresistible brand of dancefloor-friendly pop, Haircut were standard bearers of the burgeoning Brit funk movement that included Level 42, Funkapolitan, and Stimulin.
Whereas Heyward would grow into a fine songwriter in the classicist mould on later work, there’s a feeling on Pelican West that his self-penned material (he wrote everything here with the exception of one track, Love’s Got Me In Triangles, co-penned with bassist Les Nemes), was worked up from more of a jam session ethos.

Nicholas Heyward (born 20 May ) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist.[1] He came to international attention in the early s as the lead singer and songwriter for Haircut One Hundred. He and the band parted ways after their first album, after which he continued as a solo artist.
Biography

[edit]Born in Beckenham,[2] Heyward spent his early years in and around south London. He attended Kelsey Park School for Boys in Beckenham where he studied art and photography. He left school at 16 to work as a commercial artist.[3]
Haircut One Hundred
[edit]Heyward and school friends Graham Jones and Les Nemes,[4] the core of Haircut One Hundred, started bands together as far back as They were first known as Rugby, then the Boat Party, Captain Pennyworth and Moving England, before settling on Haircut One Hundred.[5] The band signed with Arista Records in and had four UK top 10 singles between and [6] Their debut album, Pelican West (), written by Heyward, reached No.&#;2.
