    Early life

    Andrea Lee was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in , as the youngest of three children in a middle-class family; her father was a Baptist minister and her mother was an elementary school teacher. Lee was born into an African American family, but quickly became surrounded by many white people which influenced her view of herself and later shaped her works. Lee was educated at the private[2]Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr.

    After earning a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in English from Harvard University's Radcliffe College,[2] Lee pursued her dream to live in Europe and moved to Russia for a year (–79) with her first husband.
